About Jilda & the Jildo

My company, WoodPeckers Roost, has been in business for four years, but has been fifty in the making.  What a marvelous journey it has been!  I feel as if my whole life has been training for Right Now!

Let me tell you a bit about my odyssey and how the Roost came to be....

I couldn’t be happier at this point in my life.  But, like a lot of us, I had a pretty dysfunctional childhood that, among other things, repressed sex in all its aspects.  I was fortunate enough to be rescued by my husband/partner and supported as I explored new and healthy attitudes about sex – and just about everything else.

One thing I learned was that I wanted to be in business for myself and in a way that benefited folks while not negatively impacting the environment.  I had grown up a closet hippie and still wished I could save the world.

I decided on sex toys in general because I wanted to enjoy them myself.  I didn’t like much of anything I saw on the market.  Toys were either uncleanable or unattractive (tasteless and vulgar also come to mind).  As I researched further, I discovered most of them were made in China, with little or no regulatory control over their manufacture or the conditions of the workers.

I immediately had a cause and a business:  provide safe, cleanable, sexy toys.  But what to use?  I’d already ruled out everything on the market.  Further research (love the internet) showed that dildos have been around for thousands, if not tens of thousands, of years, and have been made out of lots of materials.  But leather doesn’t clean, stone is too cold, and I didn’t have any camel dung.

I was thrilled to find wood as an option.  My partner Mike was a woodworker in that brief span of time before he met me and eager to help me find my own inner woodwright.  I learned things the ancient people didn’t know, such as how to apply a food safe finish that makes it cleanable.  I learned about some hand and power tools and how to see the jildo in each piece of wood.  I found woods from sustainable and abundant forests.

The original name of the business came pretty easily – I love a low pun and, after all, we really were making wood peckers.  The term jildos came after trying to say ‘Jilda’s dildos’ a few times fast.

I love what we do.  Mike seems to enjoy helping me and my family has accepted it – which is pretty functional of them!  I hope you enjoy our website and our jildos.

 Ciao for now,
Jilda
